International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme
Sendai Ikuei Gakuen High School was authorised to implement the International baccalaureate Diploma Programme in 2015, becoming the first non-international school in Japan to implement the newly-developed Dual Language Diploma Programme (DLDP). In accordance with the agreement between MEXT and the IB, Japanese DLDP students are able to study up to four of the DP subjects in Japanese. Though the student body of our first DP cohort was predominantly Japanese, each year an increasing number of international students also wish to undertake the DP at Sendai Ikuei, wanting to enjoy the benefits of an international education in a Japanese school environment. With each new school year, we have increased the number of DP subjects offered in English so that as of 2020, all subjects, other than the group 2 subject- Japanese B, are offered in English.
The school has a combined year level group in which Japanese and international students share home room activities and experiences, while undertaking the IB Diploma programme in a language that suits their strengths- either the DLDP for those Japanese students with less English experience; or the traditional DP (known at Ikuei as the ELDP - English Language Diploma Programme) for international students, Japanese students returning from living abroad, or even Japanese students with extensive English experience.
The international student body of Sendai Ikuei’s IB programme has included students from Canada, America, The United Kingdom, Uganda, Thailand, Indonesia, Korea, China, Vietnam, and Spain.
With the shared homeroom format, students of both the DLDP and the ELDP are able to develop strong friendship bonds, facilitating each other’s language development, enhancing students’ international mindedness, and strengthening inter-cultural understanding. In addition, the programme includes a number of opportunities for ELDP and DLDP students to work together such as the CAS Kickstart programme and the IB camp held in the first year of the DP. During these events, students engage in inquiry based activities to develop the IB Learner Profile attributes, the ATL skills, and international mindedness. Many of our past international students have gone on to enter Japanese universities, further strengthening their bonds with Japan, its traditions, and its culture.
The fees for international students includes orientation events upon arriving in Japan, school fees (excluding IB related expenses), and dormitory costs (including utilities, breakfast and dinner).
